Lilienthal, Max

(1813-82)
American educator and rabbi, of Russian origin. He was born in Munich, Bavaria. He served as director of the Jewish school of Riga. In 1841 the czarist government invited him to initiate the creation of state schools for Jews. Encountering opposition from the Jewish community, he eventually realized that this proposal was aimed at the conversion of Jewry. He left Russia and settled in the US, becoming rabbi of the Bene Israel Congregation in Cincinnati.
